How to import multiple images as layers in a Photoshop document

Jun 23, 2016 | Tutorials

Quite often, I find myself needing to layer multiple images into the same Photoshop document. Up until quite recently, I used to do this by opening all of the images in Photoshop, then dragging and dropping them one at a time into the same document.

As slow and monotonous as this approach may have been, it was the only way I knew how. That was until fairly recently, when I needed to do this with quite a large number of images, and decided it was finally time to look into a more efficient approach.

What I found was something I wish I had years ago; Photoshop’s ‘Load Files into Stack’ script.

Using this script, you can import dozens of images into a single Photoshop document with just a couple of clicks.

How it’s done

Open Photoshop and go to File > Scripts > Load Files into Stack.

Click Browse and select the files you want to import. If you already have the images you want to use open, just click Add Open Files.

Once you’ve done that, click OK and within a couple of seconds you’ll have a layered Photoshop document containing all of your images.

Thank you for a well explained, clean and concise tutorial. I’m in the same situation trying to drag and drop in so many images. Adobes own tutorial could learn a lot from this layout and explanation.
