As I mentioned in my review of 2013, I’ve always loved the idea of creating and selling my own products. Last year, having previously created some free design resources that went on to become quite popular, I decided to start offering premium goods via Creative Market.

I set up my shop in March and since then have released a total of 4 products. So far things have gone well, but to be honest, the last year (or 9 months to be precise) was really just about testing the water; seeing if people were interested in my products and trying to figure out exactly what sort of goods I want to be selling in the future.

I did very little in the way of marketing, simply tweeting once or twice to let people know that a product was available. As you would expect, the results were far from extraordinary, but were enough to get me thinking about what could be achieved if I was to invest a bit more time in my shop.

This year, I’m going to do just that, but before I start talking about my plans, let’s look at how my shop has performed up to now.

Like I said, these figures are far from extraordinary, but it’s a start and it will give us something to compare a new set of figures to in 6 months time.

Now let’s look at how my products have performed on an individual basis.

As you can see, the set of vector shield shapes has clocked up the most sales, selling almost three times as much as the next best-selling item. Interestingly, this is the simplest product of the 4 available.

The worst-selling product is the set of Halloween themed monster illustrations, which proved to be a huge flop having sold 0 copies.

It’s difficult to say exactly why certain products have outperformed others as there’s all sorts of factors to consider such as price, category, the popularity of file types, and the fact that some of these products have seasonal themes. However, what I think these figures do prove is that even without any marketing a good product can pretty much sell itself.

What’s next

This year, I plan to change things up a bit. I’m going to start by removing all 3 sets of illustrations from the shop. The reason for this is simple. For me, stock illustrations have a limited number of uses. Going forward, I want to focus on creating tools and resources that provide lasting value, that can be used over and over again or in a variety of different ways, and will either help to speed up your workflow or just generally make life a bit easier.

With those 3 products removed, it leaves the set of vector shield shapes, which actually compliments my latest product quite nicely.

Introducing Riband

Most sets of pre-designed ribbons available at the moment are a collection of static vector shapes. Although this isn’t a problem for some, I’ve found that modifying these shapes takes a lot more time and effort than it should.

This is why I’ve created Riband, a set of 16 flexible art brushes for Adobe Illustrator. With it you can simply draw a path of any shape or size and apply one of the ribbon-shaped art brushes included to get instant results that you can edit with ease.

As I mentioned earlier, I’m going to continue to monitor the performance of my shop and will be posting another review in about 6 months time. I’m hoping that by investing more time in my shop the figures will be slightly more impressive than they were this time around.

The reason for these posts is to document my progress as I work to increase the amount of income generated by my shop. I hope that it will prove to be a fascinating insight into the world of digital goods, in which I can share with you the knowledge that I acquire along the way and the tactics that help me to get the best results.
